Documents for moving to Paraguay: apostilles, translation and checks

Prepare foreign documents for Paraguayan residence and other procedures with a practical verification checklist.

Download the requirements for your specific procedure before ordering certificates. Then check which records need an apostille or legalisation, which need translation, and how long they remain valid.

A well-prepared file starts before the flight. Residence, identity card, education and company procedures use different records. Foreign documents also follow different validation routes, so check each document against the receiving authority's rules.

Identify the exact procedure first

The Migration Directorate's list depends on the type of residence. Minors may have additional requirements. The Identification Department has its own list for identity cards. A generic checklist is useful for planning but cannot replace the receiving authority's instructions.

  • Record the authority, exact document name and applicant.
  • Check whether originals, certified copies or both are required.
  • Note issue dates and accepted validity periods.

Apostille, legalisation and translation

Paraguay's Foreign Ministry explains that documents apostilled in the country of origin under the Apostille Convention do not need additional consular legalisation in Paraguay. Other documents may follow a legalisation route. Translation rules depend on the procedure and where the translation was made; a foreign translation can itself require validation.

  • Check whether the original, rather than a copy, must be apostilled.
  • Do not assume Portuguese documents are exempt from translation in every procedure.
  • Confirm unusual certificates or changed document formats.

Keep a file for each person and purpose

Group records by family member and purpose: residence, identity card, school, bank or company. Track issuer, date, apostille, translation and status in a simple table. Store readable digital copies securely.

  • Match names to passports.
  • Check parental authorisations where relevant.
  • Avoid sharing sensitive records through public channels.
