Temporary residence allows a foreign national to live in Paraguay for a defined period. The route and documents depend on nationality and personal circumstances.
Paraguay's National Migration Directorate publishes the requirements under Law 6984/2022. Its guidance states that temporary residence can last up to two years, with a possible extension for the same period, and permits an identity card for the residence period. The authority decides each application.
Check your route before requesting certificates
Nationals covered by the Mercosur Residence Agreement have a specific route. Others should review the general temporary residence rules. Children and relatives may have additional requirements. Check the official list when preparing your application, as documents, fees and criteria may change.
- Nationality and valid travel document.
- Personal history and certificates requested by the authority.
- Apostille, legalisation or translation where required.
Organise the file before travelling
Create a checklist for each applicant. Match names across records, check certificate validity and review any requirements for minors. Do not rely on an outdated list copied by a third party.
- Download requirements from the Migration Directorate.
- Identify documents obtainable only in your home country.
- Prepare originals, copies and translations as instructed.
Plan the steps after applying
The Migration Directorate explains the effect of provisional residence while an application is processed. After approval, the identity card is handled by the Identification Department under its own rules. If you later want permanent residence, track the expiry date and the official application window.
- Keep receipts and expiry dates.
- Check the current identity card requirements.
- Review the route to permanent residence in good time.
